The rule of unbraced length
Question:
Hi,
May I ask what is the rule for program to automatically calculate unbraced length of member?
As below figure, I thought the unbraced length of this column member is Ly=4.8 & Lz=8.4
But program indicated that Ly=3.6 & Lz=8.4
Could you please tell me why program choice the shorter part as unbraced length?
Thanks for your assistance

Answer:
Hello,
Unbraced length is defined as follow image.
In your model file, the element no.41&44 is assigned as a member. Therefore, those separated elements are designed as one member using the Member Assignment function. Among them element no.44 is unfavorable for the load combination, program design a member for the element no.44., so the Ly is printed as 3.6m. Please refer to the below result table.
Thank you.
