Resolve the following doubts regarding cutting line diagram results in the attached model.


I am a little confused in regards to the shear output results from the cutting line diagram created in the attached model.

Which component do I want to check to see the Vertical shear of the plate elements along the direction of the spans? Are the correct results supposed to be found when looking at Vxx or Vyy?

Does the orientation of the local plate elements axis matter when reading results or are the result axis solely determined by the direction of P0, P1, and P2 in the plate cutting lines? I attached a second model in which I re-oriented the plate local axis and I seem to be getting slightly different results while everything else stayed the same in the model.

Also why is there an increase in the shear value at the element node directly adjacent to the support node as shown in the picture below in the red circles areas? Shouldn’t the shear be maximum at the support node?

Answers to your questions are below:

1) Plate element results can be obtained in local or global axis (default is local axes), See the below snapshot where the difference is pointed out.
So, the Components will correspond to the selected axes and the orientation of the axes.

2) Shear forces are Vxx and Vyy.

3) This small difference at the supports is due to Element vs Avg.Nodal output. For example see the below snapshot where in a sample model i compared the Element Vs Avg.Nodal Shear results. PFA the sample model as well.
