heat of hydration MIDAS Gen

Question:

Hi,

My main goal for midas gen is to calculate the heat of hydration for mass pours.
As I have no experience with midas at all it seems a bit challenging.
Doing the tutorial "Heat of hydration" step by step works for me, but I have a few questions.

- Is it necessary to draw the soil under (or around) the concrete or can this be done by a boundary condition?
- Is there a list of materials in midas to specify boundary conditions? e.g. form-work of wood 8mm; 22mm; PP insulation; and or a combination of things?
- Is it possible to specify a boundary condition as weather e.g. top surface of a slab exposed to wind speeds of ......km/h?
- How can a add a restriction level of the formwork (e.g. totally restricted) and get a vallue of the forces inside the concrete (to predict if there is a risk of cracks)?

- after the analyses have been done is it possible to select the hottest point in the concrete without knowing the node number? (I'm usually interested in two things, what is the temperature of the hottest point in the pour, and what is the temperature difference between the hottest (core) point and a point 10mm under the surface of the pour).

- Does midas Gen generate some kind of report?

As new user you would help me a lot clarifying these things to me.

Answer:Hello,

Thank you for sending your question.

- Is it necessary to draw the soil under (or around) the concrete or can this be done by a boundary condition?
Soil modeling is needed to check the exact temperature distribution between massive concrete and soil.

- Is there a list of materials in midas to specify boundary conditions? e.g. form-work of wood 8mm; 22mm; PP insulation; and or a combination of things?
The material thermal conductivity is entered in the convection coefficient function and applied them to the structure as the boundary condition.

- Is it possible to specify a boundary condition as weather e.g. top surface of a slab exposed to wind speeds of ......km/h?
The external temperature change is entered in the Ambient Temperature Functions without considering the wind speed separately. You can get more information about Ambient Temperature Functions from the online manual link below.
http://manual.midasuser.com/EN_Common/Civil/870/Start/05_Load/10_Hydration_Heat_Analysis_Data/Ambient_Temperature_Functions.htm

- How can a add a restriction level of the formwork (e.g. totally restricted) and get a vallue of the forces inside the concrete (to predict if there is a risk of cracks)?
The internal restraint causes stress in the concrete. In other words, the influence of formwork is insignificant and generally not modeled. But if you want, you can model and check the analysis results.
The stresses can be checked via Results > HY Results > Stress.
(
The image is using midas Civil which is for bridge engineering software, but the process is all same as using midas Gen as well.)

- After the analyses have been done is it possible to select the hottest point in the concrete without knowing the node number? (I'm usually interested in two things, what is the temperature of the hottest point in the pour, and what is the temperature difference between the hottest (core) point and a point 10mm under the surface of the pour).
The temperature can be checked via Results > HY Results > temperature. You can see the node number which has the max. and min. values in the legend. You can also get analysis results for all the points in a table and sort the results of specific node.

- Does midas Gen generate some kind of report?
You can not immediately get a report on the hydration results, but you can create a user define report. Please refer to the picture below.

Also please refer some materials for your starting.

  1. Getting Started Manual (Installation Folder at C:\Program Files\MIDAS\midas Gen\Manual\Getting Started)
à This manual book explains A to Z about the software function and basic manipulation of the software.
à I recommended to read briefly for your staring of the software.
  2. Basic Tutorial Materials : http://en.midasuser.com/training/tutorial_list.asp?nCat2=130
à You will be able to find some application tutorial using midas Gen.
    à I recommend to try “3-D Simple 2-Bay Frame”
